AI startups and engineering firms highlight a new path forward as the technology’s impact on the labor market is questioned

Most often we expect AI companies to champion the benefits and opportunities that the tech is set to bring about.

So, when Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei (article’s featured photo) went against product messaging to issue a blunt warning to U.S. Congress this week on the potential for AI to wipe out “half of all entry-level white-collar jobs — and spike unemployment to 10-20% in the next one to five years”, experts sat up and took note.

While those of us with a direct stake in AI industries have been working to allay Luddite concerns that AI is here “take our jobs”, this abrupt shift in messaging from such a prominent company may look like it’s going against the status quo that the tech industry has been pushing for years.

As always, the real story isn’t so cut and dry, however Amondei’s call for us to stop “sugarcoating” the far-reaching ripple effects that AI is very likely to have on the labour market will do none of us any favors.

Instead, we should recognize the benefits that come with outsourcing certain repetitive tasks to AI and also leaning into the ways it can go beyond the limits of even the most seasoned industry professionals, such as detecting anomalies in patient MRI scans that can’t be detected by the human eye.

This May update for AI news paints an ideal picture of how AI can be harnessed to maximize the outputs of employees and how some tech companies are far ahead of the curve with regard to progressive and beneficial training programs that support both organizations and employee talent.

AI powering the smart hospital sector

Smart hospitals have the potential to transform healthcare and help providers handle how patients move through the hospital in a more efficient manner.

This isn’t just about improving how patients are treated and monitored, but also looking at the very fundamentals of workflow optimization could lead to exponential improvements in how many patients can be seen.

The radiology department is one area that needs such urgent solutions. It’s at the heart of patient diagnosis, but suffers from huge waste. MRI scanners cost $1-4M, but take images for less than 50% of the day. This leads to a collective loss of $10B+ in uncaptured revenue nationwide. At the same time, demand for radiology imaging is soaring, driven by more preventive screening, new drug monitoring, and aging populations.

Quantivly is an AI platform helping radiology departments service more patients by organizing their fragmented operational data, and it’s already being used by hospitals including Boston Children’s and UCSF. The platform analyzes, cleans, and harmonizes scanner and operational data, including scheduling and staffing information, so more people can get through the door.

How AI is helping professionals master the art of communication

Effective communication is a powerful tool that can help professionals excel in their role, knowing exactly how to present information to a range of audiences. However, knowing how to adjust messages based on whether you’re speaking to an external partner, potential investor, senior management or a team of peers doesn’t come as second nature to everyone.

Prezent is an AI-powered communications startup that’s helping enterprises simplify the process of producing professional-quality presentations tailored to the target audience.

Last week the company launched My Workspace, a central space designed to build slide decks and presentations at even faster speeds by giving the company’s suite of AI-powered solutions access to the content it needs to create tailored presentations that resonate with audiences. With a central filestore available on its platform, professionals no longer need to re-upload files multiple times or wait for files to process.

Digging through disorganized files, re-uploading the same documents, and waiting for content to process still eats up valuable time. Teams can now focus on the using the AI-powered features from the company to create their presentations.
